Vision Boards 101

lifestyle + travel Apr 03, 2021

What’s all the hype and why is everyone making one? If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already got some idea of what a vision board is, but you may not know exactly what purpose it serves or how to make one of your own. If so, you’ve come to the right place. I’m going to walk you through all the need-to-know basics of vision boarding so you can start creating your own Pinterest-worthy masterpiece ASAP.

WHAT IS A VISION BOARD?

A vision board is really just a glorified collage, so it’s a lot less complicated than you may think. Basically it’s a collection of images and words that represent the life you want to live. It’s a tangible representation of the things you want to do, have, and become in your ideal reality.

The pictures and quotes you choose to put on your board should evoke emotions within you like joy, excitement, love, and happiness. You can focus the content on one specific area of your life like ‘career’ or ‘relationships’ or you can just make it about your life as a whole.

Your vision board is a place to put all your wildest dreams down on paper and see the vision of the life you’re trying to create. It will become a physical tool for you to use to help you practice visualizing your dream life in very clear detail every day.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Vision boards are manifestation tools that work based on the Law of Attraction, which says that we attract into our lives whatever we focus our attention, thoughts and energy on most often.

This energetic attraction is always happening, whether your thoughts are positive or negative and whether or not you’re choosing to utilize it consciously for a specific purpose. This Universal law is pretty simple to understand but actually takes quite a bit of effort and practice to make sure it’s working in your favor - which is where your vision board comes in handy.

Taking time each day to sit with your board and visualize the things you want to attract in vivid detail will help send a clear message to the Universe depicting exactly what you want.

It’s important to look at the images and feel the emotions as if it were already real. Imagine that you’ve already attracted the things on your vision board and you are now living in that reality.

How does it feel to have that dream job? Those debts paid off? That healthy body? That loving relationship? That trip to Hawaii?

Feel the joy and excitement deep in your bones as if it were happening to you right now. The more you surround yourself with visions, thoughts, and emotions of the experiences you want to have, the better you will become at attracting them into your real life. Remember, “energy flows where your attention goes.”

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN

1. CREATE YOUR VISION

Before you start scouring Pinterest for inspiring quotes and pictures you want to get really clear on your vision. What exactly is it that you want? Think about your relationships, career, goals, finances, habits, body, house, car, family, future - everything. The more detail you can provide the better. If you’re having trouble coming up with your vision try meditating or journaling to help open your mind and allow ideas and goals to flow freely.

2. COLLECT YOUR MATERIALS

There aren’t any rules to follow when creating your vision board so you have complete creative control in how you want it to look, the size, color, and the general aesthetic you want to create.

The first step is to find the images and words that best represent your vision. This can be done on any search engine like Google or for some more creative imagery you can use sites like Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram. Once you’ve collected as many images and quotes as you want you’ll want to print them off.

Vision boards can also be done digitally, but I’m a big fan of the hands-on version because it allows you to really tap into your creativity and involve all your senses in the process of making your visions come to life. So if you’re down for a little arts and crafts session once you’ve printed your images you’ll need to gather up some scissors, glue sticks, markers, and a piece of poster board.

If you don’t want to glue the images to a poster board you could choose to pin them to a cork board which is what I did for my 2019 board and it came out so nicely, but it’s totally up to you! If you’re feeling extra artsy you could even paint the background and frame of the cork board to match your room or the aesthetic of the board you’re creating.

3. DISPLAY YOUR MASTERPIECE

Once you’ve played around with the positioning of your images, decided on a final look and glued or pinned everything in place the next step is to hang it up! Don’t just leave your vision board in a desk drawer or under your bed, you want it to be somewhere that you can see it.

You don’t need to stare at it for hours, but it should be in a spot where you’ll walk by it often or be able to glance at it comfortably every day. Hang it on your bedroom wall, on the refrigerator, above your desk, in your closet or anywhere you’ll be sure to see it often. If you want to keep it in your consciousness on the go, snap a picture of it and set it as the background of your smartphone or laptop (this is what I do and I love it!)

4. TRUST THE UNIVERSE

Now that you’ve displayed your vision in great detail your only job is to look at it often and practice feeling the emotions that manifesting your vision in real life would provide you with.

Work on holding these images and feelings in your awareness often, and when opportunities present themselves to bring you closer to your vision, always accept. Trust that the Universe is responding to the energy you’re sending out and conspiring behind the scenes to make your vision a reality.

If new dreams and goals come up for you feel free to add them to your board or create an entirely new one every few months or at the start of each new year. Keeping your vision board up to date is an important part of attracting what you truly want, so feel free to add and change it as you go so that it’s always growing along side you and challenging you to reach higher and dream bigger.

So, there you have it! Everything you need to know to make your own epic vision board. Work on it in your free time or invite a friend to do it with you and make a day of it. Just be sure to set aside some time to be intentional about your vision and the images you choose.

Have fun with it and don’t forget to dream big! If something you desire seems too far out of reach or totally impossible, put it on your board anyway. The Universe may surprise you.

Happy Manifesting!
